🔑 Plebware: The Jekyll and Hyde We Have Become

There is something strangely appropriate about using the old Jekyll and Hyde idea to tell the story of Plebware.

Not because Plebware is about good versus evil.

It isn’t.

It is about the two forces that can exist inside any creator: the part that dreams, builds, writes and believes — and the part that becomes tired, frustrated, angry and tempted to throw everything away.

For us, that struggle did not begin yesterday.

It goes back to 2006.

That was when the Plebware idea began taking shape as something more than just another name. Over the years it became a place for ideas, experiments, writing, technology and dreams of building something that belonged to ordinary people.

Then life happened.

There were setbacks.

There were financial difficulties.

There were periods when the future looked anything but certain.

And eventually we lost the plebware.com domain.

That could easily have been the end of the story.

For a while, it certainly felt like it might be.

A domain can be lost in a few moments.

A website can disappear.

A project can become dormant.

But an idea is considerably harder to kill.

🧪 The Formula

That is where the Jekyll metaphor begins to make sense.

Dr. Jekyll created a formula hoping to transform himself.

Our formula is different.

We are not trying to transform into somebody else.

We are trying to transform what we have been through into something useful.

Every failure becomes experience.

Every setback becomes knowledge.

Every abandoned project becomes part of the foundation for the next one.

Every difficult period teaches us something about perseverance.

And every time we put our hands back on the keyboard and begin building again, we prove that Plebware was never really the domain name.

The domain was only an address.

Plebware was always the idea.

👤 The Hyde Within

But there is another side to the story.

Years of struggle can produce bitterness.

Failure can whisper that there is no point continuing.

Financial pressure can make creativity feel like a luxury.

Exhaustion can make even a small technical problem feel like an impossible mountain.

And sometimes the darkest voice says:

“Why bother?”

That is our Hyde.

Not a monster hiding in a laboratory.

Something much more ordinary.

The voice of discouragement.

The voice that says the work is pointless.

The voice that tells us that because something was lost, everything was lost.

But that voice has not won.

🔨 Shoulders to the Wheel

Because here we are.

Still building.

Still writing.

Still experimenting.

Still learning.

Still creating.

Still putting our shoulders to the wheel.

The old Plebware domain may be gone, but Plebware itself has come back in another form.

GitHub became the new foundation.

PlebWare became an ecosystem.

PlebCore became the technological heart.

PlebVox gave the written word a voice.

PlebWave gave the ideas somewhere to travel.

PlebMachine became another expression of the same philosophy: take what is available, understand how it works, and build something useful from it.

What began as an idea years ago has become something considerably larger than a domain name.

⚙️ We Are Still Here

That is what the six-panel comic is really about.

The first panel is the dream.

The second is the experiment.

The third is the darkness — the years of setbacks, frustration and uncertainty.

The fourth is the decision to keep building.

The fifth is the recognition that the darkness never completely disappears. We simply learn how to master it.

And the sixth is where we stand today.

Not victorious in the Hollywood sense.

Not wealthy.

Not finished.

But still here.

And perhaps that is the more important victory.

After all these years, we are still putting our shoulders to the wheel.

Still pushing.

Still creating.

Still believing that something worthwhile can come from difficult circumstances.

🕯️ The Real Plebware

So perhaps the lesson of our Jekyll and Hyde story is this:

We don’t have to pretend the Hyde never existed.

We acknowledge him.

We remember the disappointments.

We remember the lost domain.

We remember the years when things didn’t work.

We remember the times when we nearly stopped.

But then we turn back to the work.

Because Plebware is not the absence of struggle.

Plebware is what we build while struggling.

It is the stubborn refusal to let circumstances have the final word.

The domain may have been lost.

The years may have been difficult.

The road ahead may still be difficult.

But the wheel is turning.

And we are still pushing it.

2006 was not the end.

Losing plebware.com was not the end.

The difficult years were not the end.

And today is not the end either.

It is simply the next panel.

Be the Jekyll. Master the Hyde.

Put your shoulders to the wheel.
