The Search for a Smile

🔑 Searching For Joy
🌾 Summary Poem — The Search for a Smile
I searched for joy in yesterday,
Where faded dreams and memories lay.
Yet every path I walked once more,
Led only to a closed old door.
Then winter's morning touched my face,
And sparrows sang with quiet grace.
The rising sun climbed through the grey,
Proclaiming God had made this day.
A little truck reversed in sight,
Its "Plan C" shining bold and bright.
It whispered gently, strong and true,
"Child, there's still more for you to do."
The smile I sought was never far,
It waited where God's mercies are.
Not in the past I could not keep,
But in the promises buried deep.
So I will walk though skies are dim,
And place my weary heart with Him.
One step, one prayer, one day at a time,
Until His joy becomes my rhyme.
🙏 Opening Prayer
Heavenly Father, when our hearts grow weary, our minds fall silent and our eyes see only the shadows around us, teach us to notice Your gentle fingerprints in ordinary moments, strengthen our faith when joy feels distant, help us to continue trusting You one step at a time, and remind us that even when we cannot feel Your presence, You are already working for our good through Christ our Lord, Amen.
📖 Introduction
“This morning I sat staring at a blank page. For the first time in a long time, I wanted to write something joyful. The trouble was, I couldn’t remember what joy felt like.”
I had just arrived at Crown Mines. Parking was scarce, so I found a quiet place down a side road and switched off the engine.
Notebook open.
Mind blank.
What do you write when your heart has grown tired of carrying the same story?
I looked toward the winter sun peeking around the corner of a building. Nearby, sparrows sang without worrying about tomorrow, while pigeons soared high above the busy streets.
Then a small red truck stopped in front of me.
Across its windscreen were the words:
PLAN C
The driver paused.
Then slowly reversed.
Beep…
Beep…
Beep…
I smiled.
Perhaps Plan C doesn’t mean Catastrophe.
Perhaps it means Continue.
And perhaps that is exactly what God asks of us.
Not spectacular victories every day.
Simply faithfulness.
Simply…
Continue.
✝️ A Lesson from Church History
Many Christians know the name of John Bunyan.
Few remember that he spent around twelve years in prison because he refused to stop preaching the Gospel.
During those lonely years, he could easily have concluded that his ministry was over.
Instead, behind prison walls, he continued writing.
Out of that suffering came The Pilgrim’s Progress, one of the most influential Christian books ever written after the Bible.
God often grows His greatest work in places that appear empty to us.
Our prisons may not have iron bars.
Sometimes they are grief.
Sometimes they are illness.
Sometimes they are financial struggles.
Sometimes they are simply exhaustion.
Yet God still whispers:
Continue.
** 🌾 Today’s Reflection
As I watched the sparrows and pigeons, I realised something.
The birds were not celebrating because life was easy.
They simply trusted the One who created them.
Jesus said:
Matthew 6:26. “ Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. “
” The smile I sought was never far, It waited where God’s mercies are.”
“The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “ Lamentations 3:22–23
🙏 Closing Prayer
Gracious Father, thank You for meeting us in ordinary places, for speaking through winter mornings, singing birds, unexpected reminders and quiet moments of reflection; help us to continue when our strength is small, to trust You when our smiles are slow to return, to remember that Your mercies are new every morning, and to walk faithfully with our eyes fixed on Jesus until the day our searching gives way to everlasting joy, in His precious name we pray, Amen.
