Remember Lot’s Wife
A Warning for Every Believer
“Remember Lot’s wife.” — Luke 17:32
Part 1: Introduction
I intended to take a break from writing devotions. But while listening to an audiobook this morning, the Holy Spirit convicted me to write this warning instead.
I know it’s long. Please read it anyway.
The Lord Jesus Christ says to us: *Remember Lot’s wife. *
Lot’s wife was married to a righteous man. She lived in a household that followed God. She heard the warnings and received clear commands.
Yet when God told them to flee Sodom without looking back, she disobeyed.
She looked back toward the city.
And she was struck dead instantly, turned into a pillar of salt.
Why Jesus Warns His Own Disciples
The Lord Jesus doesn’t tell this story to the crowds or to skeptics. He tells it to His disciples — to those who already follow Him.
Why?
To teach us something vital: You can have every spiritual advantage and still be lost.
Think about it:
- You might hear the best preaching
- You might have access to the best teaching
- You might dwell in light, knowledge, and holiness
- You might keep the best company
- You might enjoy all the privileges of church life
And yet — you yourself may remain unconverted.
Privileges Don’t Save
Many people believe that religious advantages are enough. They admit they’re not what they should be, but they say they’re going through a hard time. They think they’ll get right with God later.
It’s a mistake. A complete delusion.
Something more than privileges is required to save a soul.
Consider these examples:
| Person | Connection |
|---|---|
| Joab | King David’s captain |
| Gehazi | Prophet Elisha’s servant |
| Demas | The Apostle Paul’s companion |
| Judas Iscariot | Christ’s own disciple |
| Lot’s wife | Wife of a righteous man |
They all died in their sins. They all went down to the pit despite knowledge, warnings, and opportunities.
The Core Question
Have you yet received the Holy Spirit?
If not, you are no better than Lot’s wife.
It is wonderful to be taught the gospel from childhood. It is a blessing to hear about sin, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, holiness, and heaven from your earliest memories.
But take heed: Do not remain dead and unfruitful in the sunshine of all these privileges.
You need:
- Your own repentance
- Your own faith
- Your own sanctification
- The witness of the Spirit in your own heart
If you don’t have these, you are no better than Lot’s wife.
