The Marks of a Genuine Disciple.

๐ Let Your Life Carry the Name.
๐๐๏ธ Opening Prayer.
_Heavenly Father, I come before You this morning, on this cold Friday morning with rainy weather, and what looks like another weekend of rain.
Father, I simply want to thank You that You are there.
We give You all honour and all glory, and we say, hallowed be Thy holy name.
Lord, give us this day our daily bread. But Father, we know that our daily bread means more than financial provision and physical food.
Give us the strength to overcome temptation.
Give us the courage to be a good witness.
Give us the wisdom to be there for those who are needy, and those who simply need a word of advice, encouragement, or hope.
Lord, take us away from the bad things of this world.
Protect us from the evil one, from his accusations, his traps, and his snares.
Father, help us to forgive all those who trespass against us, including helping us to forgive ourselves, so that we may receive Your forgiveness in its fullness.
Keep our eyes focused on Your grace and upon the work of the Cross.
Most importantly, Lord, help us to be genuine followers of Jesus Christ in these difficult times in which we live, when so much of the world has become focused upon self.
Father, thank You for every benefactor who benefits us.
Thank You for those who pray for us.
Thank You for those who help us financially.
Thank You for those who encourage us when we are down.
And especially, Father, thank You for those who do good things quietly and from behind the scenes, so that the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing.
Lord, bless them abundantly.
Give them a tenfold, a hundredfold, and even a thousandfold return in blessings according to Your will and Your purposes.
In Jesusโ precious name I pray.
Amen._
๐ ๐ญ Introduction โ Back to the Basics.
Ah, today, letโs simply look at the basics.
We need to be genuine Christians.
The word Christian is actually a word I have never particularly liked, because when we look back into the Book of Acts, we find that the disciples were first called Christians at Antioch.
The early believers also described themselves as followers of Jesus, disciples, and people of the Way.
The exact history surrounding the name Christian is something that has been discussed for centuries. It may have been an outsiderโs label, and it may well have carried a mocking or dismissive sense at the time.
But ultimately, the name is not the important thing.
The life is the important thing.
Jesus taught us that a tree is recognised by its fruit.
If we claim to follow Christ, something should be visible in the way we live.
We should see love.
We should see kindness.
We should see patience.
We should see perseverance.
We should see forgiveness.
We should see humility.
And we should see hope.
We are people who have hope because our hope is not based upon the circumstances of this world.
Our hope is found in Jesus Christ.
So let us not squander that hope.
Let us use the hope that God has given us to give hope to our brothers and sisters who are struggling in this world.
Sometimes the greatest witness we can give somebody is not a sermon.
Sometimes it is simply being the person who stays when everybody else has walked away.
โช๐ A Little Church History โ The People of the Way.
Before the followers of Jesus became commonly known as Christians, the New Testament describes them as people who followed the Way.
In Acts 9:2, Saul sought out people belonging to โthe Way.โ
In Acts 11:26, we are told that the disciples were first called Christians at Antioch.
The early Church was not simply a group of people carrying a religious label.
They were followers of a person.
They followed Jesus.
They listened to His teaching.
They gathered together.
They cared for one another.
They endured persecution.
They shared what they had.
And they carried the message of the Gospel into a world that often did not understand them.
That gives us something worth remembering today.
A Christian identity was never supposed to be merely a word attached to our name.
It was supposed to describe a life.
The question for us is therefore not simply, โDo I call myself a Christian?โ
The deeper question is:
โCan somebody see Jesus in the way I live?โ
โ๏ธ๐ฟ A Poem โ Let Your Life Carry the Name.
A name can sit upon a page,
A word can tell the world our claim.
But what we do from day to day
Will show the truth behind the name.
Let love be seen in what we do,
Let kindness guide the words we say.
Let patience grow when trials come,
And let forgiveness lead the way.
For hope is not a thing to hide,
Nor is it ours to keep alone.
The light that Christ has placed within
Can help another find their home.
So let our lives become a sign,
Not pointing proudly back to self.
But pointing people towards the Cross,
And towards the Saviour's grace and help.
๐๐ Scripture One โ Matthew 7:16โ20.
โYe shall know them by their fruits.โ
โ Matthew 7:16, KJV.
Jesus reminds us that fruit reveals the nature of the tree.
A personโs words can say many things.
A personโs social-media profile can say many things.
A personโs religious vocabulary can say many things.
But eventually, life produces fruit.
And that fruit tells a story.
This does not mean that Christians become perfect people.
It means that when Christ is genuinely working in us, there should be evidence of change.
Love.
Kindness.
Patience.
Mercy.
Self-control.
Forgiveness.
These are the things people should increasingly encounter when they encounter us.
๐ก Practical Application.
Today, look at your own fruit before looking at somebody elseโs.
Ask yourself:
โWhat am I producing in the lives of the people around me?โ
๐ Todayโs Exercise.
Choose one area where you know you need to show better fruit.
Then deliberately practise it today.
If you need patience, practise patience.
If you need forgiveness, practise forgiveness.
If you need kindness, practise kindness.
โ๏ธ Heavenly View.
God sees the heart behind the action.
He knows the battles we fight while nobody else is watching.
The goal is not to appear perfect.
The goal is to allow Christ to keep changing us.
๐๐ Scripture Two โ John 13:34โ35.
โBy this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.โ
โ John 13:35, KJV.
Jesus gives His followers a remarkably simple identifying mark:
Love.
Not popularity.
Not wealth.
Not status.
Not how many Bible verses we can quote.
Not how loudly we can argue.
Love.
The Christian life is not merely about knowing what Jesus taught.
It is about allowing His teaching to transform the way we treat other people.
And that includes difficult people.
It includes people who disagree with us.
It includes people who have hurt us.
It includes people who cannot give us anything in return.
That is where Christian love becomes more than a word.
๐ก Practical Application.
Before responding to someone today, especially someone who irritates you, ask:
โAm I responding in a way that reflects the love of Christ?โ
๐ Todayโs Exercise.
Find one person who could use encouragement.
Give them something without expecting anything in return.
It could be a kind word, a message, a phone call, a helping hand, a prayer, or simply five minutes of your attention.
โ๏ธ Heavenly View.
The world notices how we treat people.
A small act of love may say more about Jesus than a long argument about Christianity.
๐๐๏ธ Scripture Three โ 1 Peter 3:15.
โBut sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you.โ
โ 1 Peter 3:15, KJV.
Peter does not tell us to hide our hope.
He tells us to be ready to explain it.
That means our hope should be visible.
When everyone else is drowning in fear, we can still have hope.
When circumstances are difficult, we can still have hope.
When the future is uncertain, we can still have hope.
Not because we know exactly what tomorrow will bring.
But because we know the One who holds tomorrow.
Our hope is not wishful thinking.
Our hope is Jesus Christ.
๐ก Practical Application.
Let somebody see your hope today.
Do not pretend that difficulties do not exist.
Instead, show that difficulties do not have the final word.
๐ Todayโs Exercise.
When somebody tells you about a problem today, do not immediately try to fix it.
First, listen.
Then encourage them.
If appropriate, tell them why your own hope is found in Jesus.
โ๏ธ Heavenly View.
God can use one hopeful person to encourage another person who feels completely hopeless.
Never underestimate what a few words of genuine Christian hope can accomplish.
๐งญ๐ A Tip for Applying Scripture.
Before you speak today, ask yourself one simple question:
โWill what I am about to say produce love, hope, or unnecessary hurt?โ
That little pause can change a conversation.
You do not have to win every argument.
You do not have to answer every insult.
You do not have to correct everybody.
Sometimes the most Christian response is to remain calm, speak the truth in love, and walk away from an argument that will produce nothing good.
Let your fruit speak louder than your argument.
๐ Todayโs Practical Exercise โ Give Someone Hope.
Today, deliberately find one person who could use some encouragement.
It might be a family member.
It might be a colleague.
It might be a friend.
It might even be a stranger who looks like they are having a difficult day.
Give them something.
A kind word.
A message.
A cup of coffee.
A helping hand.
A prayer.
Or simply five minutes of your attention.
Do it without expecting anything in return.
And if possible, do it quietly.
Let today be a practical demonstration of the words of Jesus:
Let somebody see the fruit.
๐โ๏ธ Godโs View โ What Does Heaven See?
We often look at ourselves and ask:
โAm I doing enough?โ
God sees something deeper.
He sees the heart.
He sees the struggle that nobody else knows about.
He sees the temptation you resisted.
He sees the forgiveness you offered when you had every human reason to remain angry.
He sees the kindness nobody thanked you for.
He sees the prayer you whispered when you had no words left.
He sees the person who encouraged somebody else while struggling with their own problems.
And He sees the small acts of obedience that the world never notices.
The world may measure success by money, possessions, followers, influence, and recognition.
God looks at the heart.
So do not underestimate the value of one small act of love.
A kind word may change somebodyโs entire day.
A little encouragement may keep somebody from giving up.
A simple prayer may carry someone through a difficult night.
And one ordinary Christian choosing to live like Christ can become a light in a very dark place.
Do not squander the hope God has given you.
Carry it.
Share it.
Live it.
And let your life point people toward Jesus.
๐๐๏ธ Closing Prayer.
_Thank You, Father God, for this opportunity for yet another devotion.

And yes, I know nothing is ever complete until it is complete.

I want to give You all the honour, all the glory, and all the praise.

A small act of love may say more about Jesus than a long argument about Christianity.
*๐๐๏ธ Scripture Three โ 1 Peter 3:15.*
> *"But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you."*
*๐ก Practical Application.*
Let somebody see your hope today.
Do not pretend that difficulties do not exist.
Instead, show that difficulties do not have the final word.
*๐ Today's Exercise.*
When somebody tells you about a problem today, do not immediately try to fix it.
First, listen.
Then encourage them.
If appropriate, tell them why your own hope is found in Jesus.
*โ๏ธ Heavenly View.*
God can use one hopeful person to encourage another person who feels completely hopeless.
Never underestimate what a few words of genuine Christian hope can accomplish.
*๐งญ๐ A Tip for Applying Scripture.*
*Before you speak today, ask yourself one simple question:*
*"Will what I am about to say produce love, hope, or unnecessary hurt?"*
*๐ Today's Practical Exercise โ Give Someone Hope.*
Today, deliberately find *one person* who could use some encouragement.
*Let somebody see the fruit.*
*๐โ๏ธ God's View โ What Does Heaven See?*
We often look at ourselves and ask:
*"Am I doing enough?"*
A kind word may change somebody's entire day.
A little encouragement may keep somebody from giving up.
A simple prayer may carry someone through a difficult night.
And one ordinary Christian choosing to live like Christ can become a light in a very dark place.
*Do not squander the hope God has given you.*
Carry it.
Share it.
Live it.
And let your life point people toward Jesus.
*๐๐๏ธ Closing Prayer.*
