🧹 Clearing Away the Flotsam

There comes a time in every believer’s life when they must take an honest inventory of the relationships surrounding them. Just as a sailor clears flotsam and debris from a vessel before setting sail, we too must sometimes remove unhealthy influences that hinder our walk with Christ.

Recently, I sat with my phone in hand, scrolling through my contact list and asking a difficult question:

“Who genuinely belongs in the next chapter of my life?”

It wasn’t an exercise in bitterness or revenge.

It was an act of self-preservation.

🌊 Learning From Past Wounds

Over the years I have developed certain boundaries—not because I believe myself better than anyone else, but because repeated disappointments have taught me painful lessons.

I know that no Christian is perfect.

I know that I myself need God’s grace every single day.

“For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” — Matthew 7:2

Those words continually remind me to remain humble.

Yet humility does not require us to continually place ourselves where we are repeatedly wounded.

🐑 When Shepherds Fail

One of the greatest heartbreaks is discovering that those entrusted with caring for God’s flock sometimes fail in that responsibility.

Scripture describes the role of a shepherd clearly.

“Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be.” — 1 Peter 5:2

A shepherd is called to care.

To pray.

To comfort.

To guide.

Sadly, not every church leader lives according to that calling.

💔 Silence Speaks Loudly

This morning I made a difficult decision.

I quietly removed myself from the church fellowship I had been attending.

The reason was simple.

When I reached out during one of my darkest moments—pouring out my heart and asking for prayer—I received nothing in return.

No WhatsApp message.

No telephone call.

No acknowledgement.

Only silence.

Sometimes silence says more than words ever could.

🚶 Walking Away Before Getting Burned

Leaving was not done in anger.

Nor was it done to make a statement.

It was done because I have learned that repeatedly exposing myself to disappointment only deepens old wounds.

Sometimes wisdom means walking away.

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” — Proverbs 4:23

Guarding our hearts is not the same as becoming bitter.

It simply means allowing God—not people—to define our value.

🚶‍♂️ Practical Realities

There was another practical challenge.

The church was simply too far away.

Without money for transport, attending became an exhausting journey that I could seldom manage.

Sometimes God closes a door through circumstances long before we recognise what He is doing spiritually.

🙏 Waiting for God’s Direction

For the moment, I once again find myself without a church fellowship.

Strangely, I do not feel abandoned.

Instead, I feel that the Lord is asking me to trust Him once more.

I have encountered too many leaders who pursued their own ambitions rather than God’s purposes.

Jesus warned us that this would happen.

“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.” — Matthew 7:15

Those words are as relevant today as they were two thousand years ago.

✨ My Prayer

I am not giving up on Christ.

I am not giving up on His Church.

I am simply asking Him to lead me to a fellowship where His presence is real, His Word is faithfully taught, and His people genuinely care for one another.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” — Proverbs 3:5–6

Until then, I will continue walking with Him.

For even when people disappoint us…

The Good Shepherd never does.

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” — John 10:11

🔑 Reflection

Sometimes God removes people from our lives.

Sometimes He asks us to leave.

Either way, our confidence must never rest in human beings but in Christ alone.

Healthy fellowship is a tremendous blessing.

But our relationship with Jesus must always remain our first and strongest foundation.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18
