Influenza Viruses And Me

Persistent Flu Symptoms

Sadly, I am unlucky when it comes to getting the flu. Although I was not born this way, the problem started occurring after shattering a cheekbone. That’s what you get when you are young and reckless. You see, I had received that gift as a result of a bar fight. Ever since that foolish day in 1998, I have had an infection loop. Once my sinus gets infected, the Flu becomes hard to shake, the post-nasal drip keeps reinfecting the throat and if I had a lung infection that persists sometimes (usually) 2 - 3 weeks

The injury appears to have left me more vulnerable to sinus problems. When my sinuses become infected or severely congested, they produce excess mucus that drains down the back of my throat, a condition known as post-nasal drip. This constant irritation inflames the throat and can make it easier for infections to linger.

What begins as a simple cold or flu often progresses into a sinus infection. The infected sinus drainage then continually irritates the throat, causing coughing and inflammation. If the infection reaches my lungs or chest, recovery becomes even more difficult. The lungs are already dealing with inflammation, while the infected sinus drainage continues to irritate the respiratory tract.

As a result, what might be a short illness for most people can turn into a prolonged cycle for me. The sinus infection aggravates the throat, the throat irritation aggravates the lungs, and the lungs take longer to heal because the post-nasal drip persists. Instead of recovering within a few days, I often spend two to three weeks battling lingering symptoms before my respiratory system finally settles down.

Over the years, I have learned that treating the sinus infection early is often the key to breaking the cycle before it progresses deeper into the respiratory system. I have developed a few routines that seem to help me manage my sinus problems. One of these is gently inhaling warm water containing salt and bicarbonate of soda (baking soda). While this does not kill flu viruses or cure an infection, this mixture helps loosen thick mucus. It improves sinus drainage and reduces the irritation caused by congestion and post-nasal drip.

Salt solutions are commonly used in nasal rinses because they help wash away excess mucus and irritants. While bicarbonate can make the solution more comfortable for some people. For me, the goal is not to cure the illness directly. Keeping the sinuses as clear as possible and break the cycle in which congestion, drainage, throat irritation, and prolonged respiratory symptoms feed into one another.

Hopefully, this information might help other sinus sufferers who find themselves trapped in a similar cycle of recurring congestion. Post-nasal drip, throat irritation, and prolonged respiratory infections.
