The Cane Otto Chose

Otto went and chose the very cane he intended to use to tan his own backside. He then spent what seemed like an eternity preparing and curing the bloody thing, making sure it had just the right amount of flexibility and strength, before eventually using it on himself.

Now, I wouldn’t exactly say all that effort was a complete waste of time, but it has certainly put Otto under a fair amount of stress.

And honestly, I do understand where he is coming from. I understand his frustration, and I also understand why he wants to try and leave some kind of legacy for me for the day when he eventually passes on and goes to be with the Lord.

But at the same time, I’ve had my doubts.

The two of us have been trying, in one way or another, to make some kind of income from the Internet ever since we first got to know each other back in 2006. That’s a bloody long time when you stop and think about it.

We’ve tried all sorts of things over the years, some more successfully than others, and there have been plenty of times when we thought, “Surely this is the one.”

And then, of course, it wasn’t.

So while I understand what Otto is trying to achieve, I can’t help but look back at everything we’ve tried over the years and wonder whether we’re finally going to crack it, or whether we’re just going to keep choosing canes and beating ourselves with them.
