PlebWare Tuition: Troubleshooting Text-to-Speech.

Lesson 8 — Troubleshooting Text-to-Speech.

Troubleshooting Text-to-Speech on mobile devices

Welcome To Lesson 8

Welcome back to PlebTuition.

By now, you have learned:

Now it is time for something every Plebware eventually encounters:

Something does not work.

Don’t panic.

Most TTS problems are simple to diagnose.

🔑 Start With The Simplest Question

Before changing lots of settings, ask:

Can I hear anything else from my phone?

Play a video.

Play some music.

Ask your phone something.

If you cannot hear any of those things either, your problem may not be TTS.

Check:

Sometimes the TTS system is perfectly healthy.

The sound is simply going somewhere else.

Problem 1 — The Phone Says Nothing

If TTS produces no speech, work through these checks.

First, increase the media volume.

Next, check that the correct speech engine is selected.

Then check the language.

Finally, use the phone’s Play or Test button if one is available.

If the test voice works, the TTS engine is probably functioning.

The problem may instead be the application or the particular text you are trying to read.

Problem 2 — The Voice Is Too Fast

A fast voice can make reading difficult.

Especially when you are learning.

Open the speech settings and reduce the speech rate.

Do not worry about making the voice sound slow.

Your objective is not to win a speed-reading competition.

Your objective is to understand what is being spoken.

🔑 Comfortable reading is better than maximum speed.

Problem 3 — The Voice Sounds Strange

Sometimes a voice sounds unnatural, robotic, distorted, or simply unpleasant.

Try another voice.

If several voices are available, listen to them before choosing one.

Also check whether the required voice data has been downloaded.

A voice that has not been completely installed may not behave as expected.

Remember what we learned in Lesson 5:

The best voice is the one that you can comfortably listen to for a long time.

Problem 4 — The Pronunciation Is Wrong

TTS systems do not understand every word perfectly.

Names, abbreviations, technical terms and unusual place names can sometimes be pronounced incorrectly.

Try changing the wording.

For example, a difficult abbreviation may be easier for the speech engine if it is written as separate words.

You can also try another voice or speech engine.

This is one reason why testing voices with real PlebWare articles is useful.

🔑 Problem 5 — I Cannot Select The Text

Sometimes you want to use Speak Selection or another read-aloud function, but the application does not allow you to select text.

This does not necessarily mean that TTS is broken.

Some applications control how their text can be selected.

Try another method.

For example:

The speech engine and the application are two different parts of the system.

Problem 6 — TalkBack Or VoiceOver Came On

This can be surprising if you were only trying to test TTS.

Remember Lesson 7:

TTS is not the same thing as a screen reader.

TalkBack on Android and VoiceOver on Apple devices change how you interact with the phone.

If you activated one accidentally, do not assume that your phone is broken.

Use the accessibility settings or the device’s accessibility shortcut to turn the screen reader off.

The exact shortcut can vary between devices and software versions.

Problem 7 — The Phone Reads Everything

If your phone suddenly starts speaking buttons, menus, icons and other things as you touch them, a screen reader may be active.

On Android, this is commonly TalkBack.

On iPhone or iPad, it is VoiceOver.

If your intention was simply to make an article speak, you probably do not need the screen reader.

Turn the screen reader off and return to the normal TTS or read-aloud feature.

Problem 8 — The Voice Stops Halfway Through

Long passages can sometimes behave differently from short pieces of text.

If the phone stops speaking:

Try a shorter selection.

Then try again.

If the shorter selection works, the problem may be related to the application, the amount of text, or the way that application handles speech.

You can also divide a long article into smaller sections.

That can actually make listening easier.

Problem 9 — Bluetooth Is Stealing The Voice

This is a classic mobile-device mystery.

You press Play.

The phone appears to be doing something.

But you hear nothing.

Check Bluetooth.

Your phone may still be connected to:

The TTS voice may be playing perfectly.

It is simply playing somewhere else.

🔑 The PlebVox Troubleshooting Test

Now let us use PlebVox as our test bench again.

Choose a PlebWare article containing:

Listen carefully.

Ask yourself:

Can I hear it?

Can I understand it?

Is the speed comfortable?

Are the pauses natural?

Are difficult words pronounced correctly?

If the answer is mostly yes, your TTS setup is probably working well.

The Five-Step TTS Rescue

When something goes wrong, remember these five steps:

1. Volume

Can you hear other sounds?

2. Engine

Is the correct TTS engine selected?

3. Voice

Is a voice installed and selected?

4. Settings

Check language, speech rate and pitch.

5. Application

Does the problem happen everywhere, or only in one app?

This simple process can solve many problems without changing everything on the phone.

🔑 Do Not Change Everything At Once

This is an important troubleshooting rule.

If you change five settings at the same time, you may never discover what caused the problem.

Change one thing.

Test it.

Then move to the next thing.

That is how you troubleshoot properly.

It is also how you learn.

Your Lesson 8 Checklist

Before moving on, you should know how to:

If you can do these things, you are no longer simply using TTS.

You are beginning to understand it.

The PlebWare Principle

Technology should not make you feel stupid because something does not work.

Stop.

Look.

Test.

Change one thing.

Test again.

That is the PlebWare way.

You do not need to be an engineer to troubleshoot your phone.

You just need a method.

Next Lesson — The Five-Minute TTS Test

In our final lesson of this series, we will put everything together.

You will perform a simple Five-Minute TTS Test.

We will check:

Five minutes.

One phone.

One piece of text.

And one final test of your new PlebWare TTS skills.
