The PlebWare Charter.

From Concept to Fulfilment.

Every project has a beginning.

For PlebWare, that beginning stretches back long before the name itself existed.

In 2003, Otto Wilhelm Friedrich Brinkmeier founded his first information technology company, 0tronix Developments.

The company name deliberately began with the numeral 0 (Zero) and was pronounced “Zerotronix.” During the era of printed telephone directories, businesses were listed alphabetically, and the unusual spelling ensured the company appeared near the beginning of the listings.

Originally registered as a media development company, 0tronix Developments specialised in:

• Web design.
• Graphic design.
• Instruction manuals.
• Technical documentation.
• Educational material.
• Multimedia development.

The long-term vision has always been education through technology.

To remain financially independent while developing educational content, the company expanded into a variety of business services including:

• Website development.
• Website maintenance.
• Logo design.
• Letterhead creation.
• Invoice systems.
• Payroll documentation.
• Computer maintenance.

  Early Clients

The Birth of PlebWare.

During 2006, Otto Brinkmeier met Julian Boyd de Villiers, who would eventually become his development partner.

Julian brought audio production skills to the growing project and introduced Otto to a young collaborator named Martin de Walt.

Together they developed a new identity that better reflected the project’s philosophy.

That name became PlebWare.

The name represented software and knowledge created for ordinary people rather than large corporations. It reflected the belief that technology should be practical, understandable, affordable, and within everyone’s reach.

PlebWare officially became the project’s identity in 2010, replacing the earlier concepts that had evolved from the original 0tronix vision.

The PlebDictionary

As the project matured, Otto and Julian began creating a shared vocabulary that described the growing PlebWare ecosystem.

These became known as the PlebTerms.

Originally there were more than twenty different terms, each describing a particular product, service, or philosophy.

As the platform evolved into a publishing and education ecosystem, many of these became unnecessary.

In 2026, the terminology was refined to preserve only the core concepts that continue to define the PlebWare identity.

PlebTuition

Originally, PlebTuition referred to downloadable PDF training manuals.

Today it represents every form of learning produced by PlebWare, including written tutorials, online courses, videos, research articles, and educational resources.

PlebTuition has become the educational heart of both the PlebWare publishing platform and the PlebMachine operating environment.

PlebPacks

PlebPacks were among the earliest downloadable products created by the company.

Two of the original software collections remain archived on Download.com.

Although software compilation packs are no longer produced, the name continues to represent downloadable information packs, educational bundles, and resource collections.

PlebSticks

A PlebStick is a portable USB flash drive containing software, educational material, or complete portable environments such as PlebMachine or PlebSword.

PlebBuddy

PlebBuddy was created as the collective name for members of the PlebWare community.

Rather than simply describing customers, the term represents people who share the project’s philosophy of learning, repairing, creating, and helping others.

PlebSword

PlebSword is a collection of Bible study resources built around the e-Sword platform, including commentaries, devotional material, church resources, and educational courses developed by PlebWare.

PlebChurch

PlebChurch represents the ministry and Christian publishing branch of PlebWare, providing biblical teaching, devotional writing, educational resources, and digital outreach.

Technology Should Remain Connected to Humanity

🔑 Preamble

We, the architects, engineers, writers, educators, creators, and users of PlebWare, affirm this manifesto as our declaration of purpose, principle, and vision.

PlebWare exists to demonstrate that technology should empower ordinary people rather than control them.

Founded in 2010, PlebWare began as an independent initiative dedicated to practical computing, Linux, repair culture, and digital freedom.

The public GitHub Pages presence was established on 6 June 2015.

Beginning on 25 May 2026, the project underwent its most significant transformation. What had once been primarily a Linux-focused initiative expanded into a comprehensive publishing, education, and knowledge platform.

That redevelopment was completed on 30 June 2026, marking the beginning of continuous publication.
