IQ Tests, Intelligence and the Curious Human Mind

🧠 IQ Tests, Intelligence and the Curious Human Mind

There is something fascinating about an IQ test.

You sit down, answer a series of questions, solve some patterns, work out some numbers, and eventually a number appears on the screen.

But what does that number actually tell us about you?

Quite a lot — but not everything.

An IQ score is a measurement from a particular test, under particular conditions. It is not a complete measurement of a human being, and it certainly isn’t a measurement of someone’s worth.

So let’s have a little fun with it.

🧩 Three IQ Tests Worth Exploring

🔬 Open Psychometrics — Full Scale IQ Test

Take the Full Scale IQ Test

The Open-Source Psychometrics Project describes this as a test covering several areas of cognitive ability, including short-term memory, reasoning and verbal ability.

Importantly, the site itself warns that an online test is not a replacement for a professionally administered IQ assessment. It describes its test as a demonstration and educational exercise rather than something on which important decisions should be based.

🧠 Advanced IQ Test

Try the Advanced IQ Test

This test uses questions based on the International Cognitive Ability Resource (ICAR) framework and provides an overall score together with a profile covering areas such as spatial, abstract, verbal and numerical reasoning.

The site describes itself as an educational screening tool rather than a clinical assessment.

🎓 Mensa IQ Challenge

Try the Mensa IQ Challenge

Mensa’s online challenge consists of 35 puzzles with a 25-minute limit. Mensa specifically says that this particular challenge is for entertainment and does not qualify someone for Mensa membership.

It also makes an interesting point: people can receive different scores when taking the same test at different times. Factors such as tiredness, hunger and mood can affect performance.

🧠 Why Your IQ Score Isn’t the Whole Story

An IQ score is best thought of as a measurement of performance on a particular kind of cognitive test.

It is not the same thing as measuring:

A person can be extremely capable in real life without having an extraordinary IQ score.

And someone who performs brilliantly on a test still has plenty of things left to learn.

🔄 Why Taking the Same IQ Test Again Can Be Problematic

This is where things get particularly interesting.

If you have taken an IQ test before, taking the same test — or even a very similar one — again isn’t necessarily a completely fresh measurement.

You may remember:

That familiarity can give you an advantage.

This becomes especially relevant when somebody repeatedly takes online tests simply to see whether they can push their score higher.

Eventually, you may be measuring test familiarity and practice as well as the abilities the test was originally intended to measure.

That doesn’t make the exercise useless.

It simply means we should be careful about interpreting the number.

👴 Does Intelligence Change As We Get Older?

Age is another reason to be cautious about treating a single IQ score as a permanent label.

Human cognitive abilities are complicated. Different mental abilities develop and change differently throughout life, and performance on a particular test can also be affected by sleep, stress, health, motivation, familiarity with the material and the testing environment.

That is one reason a score should never be interpreted in isolation.

And there is another important point:

Getting older does not mean becoming unintelligent.

Life experience itself gives us forms of knowledge and problem-solving ability that a twenty-minute online puzzle cannot possibly measure.

👦 Why IQ Tests Can Be Useful When You’re Young

There is a positive side to these tests.

When you’re young and still deciding what you enjoy studying, a cognitive test can sometimes highlight areas that deserve more attention.

Perhaps you discover that:

That information can become a starting point for learning.

It shouldn’t become a label.

Instead of saying:

“I’m bad at mathematics.”

you might say:

“Mathematics is an area where I need more practice.”

That’s a much healthier way of looking at learning.

🚀 Can We Become More Intelligent?

Here I will make a distinction between what the evidence tells us and what I personally believe.

My personal belief is that human beings have enormous potential to learn, develop skills and become better thinkers.

I don’t believe that a number on an IQ test should become a ceiling over someone’s head.

If you struggle with something today, that doesn’t mean you will always struggle with it.

You can read.

You can study.

You can practise.

You can ask questions.

You can learn from mistakes.

You can expose yourself to new ideas.

You can keep your brain active.

And you can become considerably more capable than you were yesterday.

Whether that should be described as “raising your IQ” is a much more complicated scientific question.

But becoming a better learner is unquestionably worthwhile.

🎯 The PlebWare IQ Challenge

So here’s the challenge.

Try one of the tests above.

Don’t obsess over the number.

Instead, look at which types of questions you enjoyed and which ones gave you trouble.

Then ask yourself:

What could I learn from this?

If you discover that you enjoy pattern recognition, explore logic puzzles.

If numbers challenge you, practise mathematics.

If verbal questions are difficult, read more widely and build your vocabulary.

If memory is the problem, experiment with different memory techniques.

The objective isn’t to prove that you’re clever.

The objective is to keep becoming cleverer.

⚠️ One Last Warning

Online IQ tests are fun, interesting and potentially educational.

They are not a diagnosis.

They are not a complete measurement of intelligence.

And they should not determine how you see yourself or somebody else.

For a genuine psychological assessment, a properly administered and supervised test by a qualified professional is a different matter. Mensa makes the same distinction with its online challenge.

So take the test.

Have some fun.

Scratch your head over a few impossible-looking patterns.

Celebrate the questions you get right.

Learn something from the questions you get wrong.

And then carry on learning.

Because the most interesting intelligence test is probably the one we take every day:

What did I learn today that I didn’t know yesterday?
