My Journey Towards GIMP

🎨 My Graphic Design Journey

“Every picture tells a story. My goal is to ensure that story begins before the first word is ever read.”

🖌️ A Lifelong Passion

I have always loved creating graphics.

Long before I considered myself an author or publisher, I was fascinated by the way a single image could communicate emotion, capture attention, or tell part of a story before a single word was read. Whether it is a book cover, desktop wallpaper, website banner, or promotional poster, good design has the power to create an immediate connection between creator and audience.

In many ways, graphics are the first handshake between a project and its viewers. A thoughtfully designed visual invites people to explore further, while poor design can discourage even the most interested reader. In an increasingly visual world, strong graphics are no longer a luxury—they are an essential part of effective communication.

🌟 What You’ll Find Here

This section of my website explores both the creative and practical sides of graphic design.

Here you will find the artwork that helps shape my identity as an author and content creator, from wallpapers inspired by my science fiction universe to concept artwork and book covers that evolve alongside my stories. I enjoy sharing not only the finished results but also the creative process behind them.

For readers who simply appreciate digital art, I hope these pages provide inspiration and a glimpse behind the scenes. I also share design techniques, workflows, and occasional tutorials, particularly using open-source software.

Those looking for freelance design work will also find examples of the services I provide. Whether you require website graphics, social media banners, promotional artwork, wallpapers, or custom branding, my portfolio demonstrates the practical, straightforward approach that I bring to every project.

💾 Where It All Began

Looking back, my journey into graphic design began with one of the simplest programs imaginable—Microsoft Paint.

Although basic by today’s standards, it taught me the fundamentals of drawing, colour, and patience.

From there I graduated to Micrografx Picture Publisher, which I discovered on a magazine cover disc. It was a remarkable step forward at the time and opened my eyes to what digital image editing could achieve.

Eventually I discovered GIMP, and it has remained my primary graphics editor ever since. Over the years I have watched it mature into an exceptionally capable application, one that continues to meet nearly all of my creative requirements.

🐧 Why I Choose Open Source

Readers looking for Photoshop tutorials will probably be disappointed.

I have never used Adobe Photoshop, and I have no plans to change that. This is not a criticism of Photoshop—it is simply a reflection of my own philosophy towards software.

Throughout much of my career I have chosen to work with free and open-source software whenever practical. I believe creativity should be accessible to everyone, regardless of budget, and I enjoy demonstrating what can be accomplished using tools that are freely available.

My work is therefore centred around applications such as GIMP, Inkscape, and other open-source creative software rather than expensive commercial alternatives.

✨ More Than Just Pictures

As I write these articles, I find myself both reminiscing about the past and looking towards the future. Graphic design has been a constant companion throughout my creative journey, evolving from a simple hobby into an important part of my work as an author, publisher, and educator.

For me, graphics are never merely decorative additions. They are visual storytellers that reinforce ideas, strengthen brands, clarify information, and often communicate emotions more quickly than words ever could.

Every image I create is another opportunity to tell a story.

🤖 AI as My Digital Sketchbook

In recent years, artificial intelligence has become an invaluable part of my creative workflow. Rather than replacing my creativity, it has expanded it.

I frequently use AI image generators to create concept artwork, rough compositions, mood boards, and placeholder illustrations. These first drafts allow me to explore ideas rapidly, experiment with different styles, and visualise scenes long before I commit to a final design.

However, I rarely consider an AI-generated image to be a finished piece. Instead, I treat it as a digital sketch—a starting point rather than the destination.

🎨 From AI Concept to Finished Artwork

Once I have settled on a concept that captures the vision in my mind, I import the artwork into GIMP, Inkscape, and other graphics applications where the real craftsmanship begins.

There I repaint sections, adjust colours, redraw elements, create vector graphics, combine multiple images, remove unwanted artefacts, add typography, and reshape the composition until it reflects my own creative identity.

The AI helps me discover possibilities.

The finished artwork becomes mine through refinement, editing, and countless creative decisions.

✍️ Today I Paint With Words

In many respects, my artistic process has evolved.

Years ago I painted with a mouse and graphics tablet.

Today I often begin by painting with words.

Through carefully written prompts I guide an AI towards the vision I have in my imagination. Once the concept is close enough, I take over and refine it using traditional digital art techniques until the final piece becomes uniquely my own.

🛠️ AI Is a Tool—Not the Artist

To me, AI is neither a shortcut nor a replacement for artistic ability.

It is simply another tool—much like a camera, a paintbrush, or a graphics tablet.

The imagination still belongs to the artist; AI merely helps bring those ideas to the canvas more quickly.

My goal has never been to press a button and claim someone else’s work as my own.

My goal is to transform ideas into finished artwork that tells a story, communicates a message, and carries my own creative fingerprint.

🔑 My Creative Philosophy

Today, I still paint.

The only difference is that instead of beginning with a brushstroke, I often begin with carefully chosen words.

AI helps me imagine.

Open-source software helps me create.

Experience helps me refine.

And creativity is what ultimately turns an idea into a finished masterpiece.

“Every graphic begins as an idea. Whether sketched with a pencil, painted with a mouse, or described with carefully chosen words, it is the artist who transforms imagination into something worth sharing.” 🎨✨
